You can’t fault John Chayka’s endeavour or conviction, as the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ new general manager has taken giant strides in transitioning the team to his vision.

With the regular season less than two months away, we won’t have to wait too long to see whether the bevy of changes has the desired effect.

Maple Leafs Odds To Win the Stanley Cup

The Maple Leafs’ Stanley Cup odds are +3000.

Before the Maple Leafs drafted Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 pick, their hockey odds at the BetMGM sportsbook to win it all were +6000. They’ve since improved to +3000, the third-shortest of Canadian teams.

While few analysts expect the Maple Leafs to challenge the favourites, optimism is pervading a city whose hockey fans haven’t seen their team win the Stanley Cup since 1966. That’s the longest Stanley Cup drought

Only three teams (Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres, and Philadelphia Flyers) are also enduring droughts of at least half a century.

Toronto Maple Leafs Predictions

I predict the Maple Leafs will make the playoffs in the first season under Jim Hiller’s stewardship.

It’s already been a franchise-changing offseason for the Maple Leafs, who cleaned house and brought in Chayka and senior executive advisor Mats Sundin.

They’ve made their intentions clear, desperate to prioritize mobile, puck-moving defencemen and place greater emphasis on puck possession. That mantra is reflected in the hiring of their new head coach.

And while the Maple Leafs suffered their worst point total since 2015-16, there were mitigating factors for last season’s inadequacies. Injuries plagued the team throughout the season, which took a toll on collective confidence.

Chris Tanev, William Nylander, Auston Matthews, and Anthony Stolarz suffered injuries of varying severity, the worst of which kept Tanev out of the lineup for 71 games.

A clean bill of health and a fresh lease on life should help the Maple Leafs return to the playoffs.

Toronto Maple Leafs Eastern Conference Odds

The Maple Leafs’ odds to win the Eastern Conference are +1700.

Five teams are more likely to win the East, according to the hockey odds. Trading directly in front are the Montreal Canadiens, whose odds of +1100 represent an 8.33% implied probability.

The Maple Leafs’ odds of +1700 carry a 5.56% likelihood. The Florida Panthers (+340) and Carolina Hurricanes (+375) are the favourites to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Toronto Maple Leafs Atlantic Division Odds

The Maple Leafs’ odds to win the Atlantic Division are +1000.

The Maple Leafs have shorter odds to win the Atlantic Division than last season’s victors, the Buffalo Sabres.

They are also more likely to secure the division crown than the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, and Detroit Red Wings.
