The Canadiens are among the 10 favourites to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1993. It’s a promising forecast, considering they are the second-youngest team behind the Chicago Blackhawks. 

Regarding Canadian teams, only the Edmonton Oilers have shorter hockey odds to win it all.

I predict the Canadiens will make the playoffs for the third straight season. They secured the services of several influential figures, signing the following players to contract extensions: Lane Hutson, Ivan Demidov, Mike Matheson, Kirby Dach, and Jakub Dobeš. 

St. Louis has a solid roster at his disposal. 

However, the Canadiens are thin down the middle. As it stands, Oliver Kapanen, Jake Evans, or Alex Newhook will start the campaign as the second-line center. 

While all three players are key contributors, none of them is a bona fide second-line center. It’s where St. Louis will want to improve, particularly with Michigan State star and Canadiens prospect Michael Hage opting to play another season in the NCAA. 

Despite the issue down the middle, the Canadiens are skilled, fast, and play well as a collective. They finished the 2025-26 season three points behind the Atlantic Division-winning Buffalo Sabres. 

While I don’t expect them to return to the Eastern Conference final, securing a playoff spot shouldn’t pose much of a problem.

Montreal’s Eastern Conference hockey odds to win the Eastern Conference are +1000.

Only four teams are more likely to win the East, with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers the frontrunners. 

The Canadiens are trading just ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs, whose odds have improved throughout the offseason, most notably because of drafting Gavin McKenna. 

Uncertainty enveloping the Ottawa Senators has seen their Stanley Cup chances decrease.

The Canadiens odds to win the Atlantic Division are off the board.

After failing to make the playoffs, the Panthers are the clear favourites to win the division for the third time in six seasons. 

The Canadiens are the third-most likely, trading behind the Lightning. The Maple Leafs have made some inroads with an ostensibly strong offseason, but the Habs still have some breathing room ahead of their rivals.
