Richest NHL Owners, Ranked By Net Worth

There’s the rich, and then there’s the super-rich, a category the NHL’s wealthiest owners are a part of.

The four richest owners have fortunes worth at least $12 billion. I’m sure those owners wish their vast wealth directly correlated with their teams being consistently among the hockey odds favourites at the BetMGM sportsbook to win the Stanley Cup. 

I’ve ranked the wealthiest NHL owners, with the Edmonton Oilers’ Daryl Katz coming in as the richest owner of a Canadian team.

Who Are the Wealthiest NHL Owners?

1. Henry Samueli, Anaheim Ducks: $27.7 billion

Henry Samueli was a professor at UCLA and is the co-founder of Broadcom Corporation, a semiconductor company in the broadband industry. 

2. Stanley Kroenke, Colorado Avalanche: $24.3 billion

Stanley Kroenke owns Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which operates the Avalanche, Arsenal, the Los Angeles Rams, the Denver Nuggets, and the MLS’ Colorado Rapids.

3. Philip Anschutz, Los Angeles Kings: $19.4 billion

Philip Anschutz, co-owner of the Kings with Edward P. Roski, has his fingers in many pies, including stocks, real estate, railroads, and more. He also owns stakes in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.  

4. Hasso Plattner, San Jose Sharks: $12 billion

Hasso Plattner is the co-founder and chairman of the supervisory committee of SAP SE. He took full control of the Sharks in 2013. 

5. Josh Harris, New Jersey Devils: $10.6 billion

Josh Harris co-founded Apollo Global Management in 1990, one of the world’s largest alternative investment firms. He owns the Washington Commanders and also has an ownership stake in the Philadelphia 76ers and Crystal Palace of the Premier League.

He owns the Devils alongside David Blitzer. 

6. Terry Pegula, Buffalo Sabres: $9.3 billion

Terry Pegula is involved in natural gas development, real estate, entertainment, and professional sports. He also owns the Buffalo Bills. 

T-7. Christopher, Marian Ilitch, Detroit Red Wings: $7.6 billion

Christopher Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, and his family own the Detroit Tigers, Champion Foods, Olympia Entertainment, Olympia Development, Uptown Entertainment, Blue Line Foodservice Distribution, and Little Caesars.

T-7. Vincent Viola, Florida Panthers: $7.6 billion

Vincent Viola has roots in the U.S. Army and attended the United States Military Academy. He climbed the ranks to major of the 101st Airborne. After his time in the military, he founded several trading and clearing firms. 

9. Daryl Katz, Edmonton Oilers: $7.2 billion

Daryl Katz is a prominent philanthropist who recently donated $7 million to the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Law. He is the owner of Katz Group of Companies.

10. David Thomson, Winnipeg Jets: $7 billion

David Thomson is one of six billionaire heirs to the media and publishing empire founded by his grandfather, Roy Thomson. 

Mark Chipman, who co-owns the Winnipeg Jets with Thomson, is worth about $500 million. 

11. Bill Haslam, Nashville Predators: $6 billion

Bill Haslam helped create the Pilot Corporation with his father, Jim, and brother Jimmy, who owns the Cleveland Browns and Columbus Crew. 

12. Tom Gaglardi, Dallas Stars: $5.5 billion

A Canadian businessman, Tom Gaglardi is the president of Northland Properties Corporation, which owns and operates the Stars and several hotel and restaurant chains, including Sandman Hotels, Inns and Suites and Moxie’s Bar and Grill.

13. Jeremy Jacobs, Boston Bruins: $5.4 billion

Jeremy Jacobs has an investment stake in the New England Sports Network (NESN). He is known for his philanthropic ventures, creating his family-run Boston Bruins Foundation. 

14. Murray Edwards, Calgary Flames: $4.8 billion

The owner of Edco Financial Holdings Ltd., Murray Edwards is also a leading investor and managing director of Canadian Natural Resources Limited and Ensign Energy Services Inc., two of Canada’s biggest oil companies.

T-15. Samantha Holloway, Seattle Kraken: $3.9 billion

Samantha Holloway is the daughter of the original team founder, the late David Bonderman. She, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Tod Leiweke, leads the Seattle Hockey Partners. Bruckheimer is a well-known television producer. 

T-15. Ted Leonsis, Washington Capitals: $3.9 billion

There isn’t much Ted Leonsis doesn’t do. He’s an investor, filmmaker, author, inventor, philanthropist, and former politician. 

His company, Under Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owns the Washington Wizards, the Washington Mystics, and Arena Football League teams the Washington Valor and Baltimore Brigade, along with the eSports outfit Team Liquid.

17. Craig Leipold, Minnesota Wild: $3.6 billion

Craig Leipold was the previous owner of the Nashville Predators. 

T-18. Francesco Aquilini, Vancouver Canucks: $3.3 billion

Francesco Aquilini is the managing partner of his father’s company, Aquilini Investment Group, which oversees real estate, energy, development, restaurants, agriculture, and hotels. 

T-18. Ryan Smith, Utah Mammoth: $3.3 billion

Ryan Smith also owns the Utah Jazz and Real Salt Lake of the MLS.

20. Larry Tanenbaum, Toronto Maple Leafs: $2.8 billion

Larry Tanenbaum is chairman and CEO of the Kilmer Group. He is also a part of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC, the Toronto Argonauts, the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, and Scotiabank Arena.

T-21. Geoff & Gregg Hoffmann, Pittsburgh Penguins: $2.6 billion

The Hoffmann family purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins from Fenway Sports Group in 2025.  

T-21. Bill Foley, Vegas Golden Knights: $2.6 billion

Formerly an attorney, Bill Foley was also in the U.S. Air Force. He is also the chairman of Fidelity National Financial (FNF) and Black Knight Financial Services.

23. Danny Wirtz, Chicago Blackhawks: $2.5 billion

The Wirtz family is the NHL’s longest-tenured owners, overseeing the Chicago Blackhawks since 1954. Danny took over in 2023 following his father’s death. 

24. Tom Dundon, Carolina Hurricanes: $2.3 billion

Tom Dundon purchased the Carolina Hurricanes for $420 million in 2018. He also owns the Portland Trail Blazers. 

25. Doug Ostrover, Tampa Bay Lightning: $2.2 billion

In 2027, Vinik Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz will take over full ownership of the team. Lipschultz is worth $1.5 billion and Ostrover $2.2 billion. 

26. James Dolan, New York Rangers: $2 billion

The executive chairman and CEO of The Madison Square Garden Company, James Dolan, oversees the New York Rangers, the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, the New York Knicks, the New York Liberty, and the networks MSG Network and MSG Plus.

27. Brian L. Roberts, Philadelphia Flyers: $1.6 billion

In his prime, Brian Roberts was an elite squash player, earning a gold medal for Team USA at the 2005 Maccabiah Games. 

28. Geoff Molson, Montreal Canadiens: $1.5 billion

Geoff Molson sits on the board of the Molson family foundation, which supports initiatives across Canada. He is also known for his philanthropic ventures. 

29. Tom Stillman, St. Louis Blues: $1.47 billion

A former lawyer who worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he served as Chief Counsel for Export Administration, Tom Stillman became the majority owner of the St. Louis Blues in 2012. 

30. Jon Ledecky & Scott D. Malkin, New York Islanders: $1.4 billion

Jon Ledecky studied business administration at Harvard University, but his career began in journalism. Scott Malkin is the founder of Value Retail, a luxury retail destination provider. 

31. Michael Andlauer, Ottawa Senators: $1.3 billion

Michael Andlauer previously had minority ownership shares in the Canadiens before acquiring the Ottawa Senators.

32. John P. McConnell, Columbus Blue Jackets: $1.1 billion

John P. McConnell took over control of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2008, following his father’s passing. 

Who Is the Wealthiest NHL Owner?

Henry Samueli is the NHL’s richest owner. The Anaheim Ducks owner is reportedly worth $27.7 billion. According to Forbes, Samueli is the 34th-wealthiest person in North America. 

Samueli, 71, is the co-founder and chairman of chipmaker Broadcom. He purchased the team from the Walt Disney Company in 2005 for an estimated $70 million. 

The Ducks, valued at $1.4 billion, have been in rebuild mode for about a decade, but are gradually ascending the Stanley Cup odds leaderboard recently.
