How Did Daryl Katz Get So Rich?

Katz amassed his wealth through a range of business ventures, from pharmacies to real estate.

In 1991, he purchased the Canadian rights to the American franchise, Medicine Shoppe. A few years later, Katz bought a Canadian drugstore franchise, Rexall, and expanded it into the United States. After a decade in the business, Katz owned nearly 1,200 pharmacies across Canada.

Katz then began selling off his pharmacy operations and pivoted to real estate and entertainment. He bought the Oilers in 2008 and has since developed a $2 billion, 25-acre complex in downtown Edmonton known as the ICE District.

What Companies Does Daryl Katz Own?

Katz is the founder and chairman of the Katz Group of Companies, which owns the Edmonton Oilers, Rogers Place arena, and the surrounding ICE District in downtown Edmonton.

The Katz Group also owns a subsidiary, OEG Inc. (formerly Oilers Entertainment Group). Through OEG Inc., Katz owns Tokyo Smoke, a Canadian cannabis retail brand, and Dark Castle Entertainment, a film production label.
