The Canucks have -2500 hockey odds at the BetMGM sportsbook to miss the playoffs, which carry a 96.15% implied probability. That puts into perspective the behemoth task facing first-year head coach Manny Malhotra.
On the positive side, Malhotra enters his first NHL head coaching job with no expectations and even less pressure.
The Canucks made a rash of changes at every level, including in the front office. They fired former general manager Patrik Allvin in May and replaced him with Ryan Johnson, who hired Malhotra to kickstart the new era on the West Coast.
The Canucks endured a woeful 2025-26 season, finishing with 58 points, the fifth-worst output in franchise history. While an improvement is almost assured, a playoff spot will likely be a task too tall for a team in rebuild mode.
While they won’t be rushing to trade Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson, neither marquee player’s future is certain in Vancouver.
Nothing is off the table, but I suspect Johnson and Co. will hope to see both players enjoy a resurgent season to elevate their trade value after disappointing 2025-26 seasons.
Jake DeBrusk is another player expected to be dealt, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the first to be offloaded.
Goaltending will be key for the Canucks to put up a stronger fight than last season, with Thatcher Demko attempting a comeback from yet another injury-riddled season.
In nine seasons, Demko has played more than 35 games twice. Time is running out for Demko to prove he can still be a No. 1 netminder in the NHL. If he can’t avoid the treatment table this season, the Canucks will be forced to rethink their stance on the position.
Kevin Lankinen is an excellent backup, but he’s not quite at the calibre required to be the go-to guy. Nikita Tolopilo, meanwhile, has just 23 NHL games under his belt.
While a more competitive season is almost guaranteed, I’m expecting another bottom-of-the-standings finish. It’s not all bad for the Canucks, though, as they should have another chance of landing the No. 1 draft pick for the first time.
