UMass Minutemen All-Time Greatest Football Players
1. Marcel Shipp
Shipp played running back for UMass from 1997 to 2000.
He’s the program’s all-time leading rusher with 6,250 yards and 58 touchdowns.
He holds single-season records in both categories, rushing for 2,542 yards in 1998 and 24 touchdowns in 1999.
He was a second-team All-American, third-team All-American twice, and three-time first-team All-A-10.
2. Liam Coen
As of 2025, Coen is the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, before he began his coaching career, he played quarterback for the University of Massachusetts from 2004 to 2008, starting for four years.
He threw for 11,031 yards (most in program history) and 90 touchdowns (first).
He holds the program records for most yards (10,871) and touchdowns (93).
He’s enshrined in the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame.
3. Milt Morin
Morin played tight end for UMass from 1963 to 1965.
He was a first-team Little All-American and two-time first-team All-East.
Morin was also the first-ever UMass player to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft, going No. 14 overall in 1966.
He finished his career with 1,151 receiving yards, which was a school record.
4. Steve Baylark
Baylark was the running back for UMass from 2003 to 2006.
He ran for 5,332 yards (second) and 42 touchdowns (third).
He was a second-team I-AA All-American, second-team All-A-10, three-time first-team All-A-10, the A-10 co-Offensive Player of the Year, and is enshrined in the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame.
5. Todd Bankhead
Bankhead was a quarterback for the Minutemen from 1998 to 1999.
He threw for 7,018 yards (second) and 51 touchdowns (third).
In 1998, he threw for 3,919 yards and 34 touchdowns, which are both single-season UMass records.
He also recorded 6,821 total yards (second).
He led UMass to its FCS national title and was a two-time second-team All-A-10.
