Miami (OH) RedHawks All-Time Greatest Football Players
1. Ben Roethlisberger
When I think of the Miami (OH) RedHawks, I think of Roethlisberger, and for good reason.
He played at the school from 2001 to 2003, passing for 10,829 yards (second in program history) and 84 touchdowns (first).
He also holds RedHawks single-season records in passing yards and passing touchdowns with 4,486 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2003.
He was the MAC MVP, MAC Offensive Player of the Year, and MAC Freshman of the Year, led them to a GMAC Bowl win where he earned MVP honours, and the school retired his No. 7.
2. Travis Prentice
Prentice played running back for the RedHawks from 1996 to 1999.
Over that time, he had 5,596 rushing yards, which is the program record by exactly 1,228 yards over Deland McCullough.
He also holds three of the top four single-season rushing records, including the top mark, with 1,787 yards in 1998.
On top of that, he holds the top single-game rushing mark with 376 yards in 1999 against Akron.
Prentice also added 73 rushing touchdowns. He holds the top three single-season rushing records, headlined by 25 in 1997.
He was a third-team All-American, the MAC MVP, and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
3. Bob Hitchens
Hitchens also played running back for the RedHawks. He did so from 1971 to 1973.
He ran for 3,118 yards (fourth) and 34 touchdowns (third).
He holds the single-game rushing touchdown record with four in 1972 against Dayton.
Hitchens was a third-team All-American, the MAC Offensive Player of the Year, and the Miami Athlete of the Year; the school also retired his No. 40.
4. Zac Dysert
Dysert played for Miami (OH) from 2009 to 2012.
He broke Roethlisberger’s passing record, throwing for 12,013 yards (first). He also had 73 passing touchdowns (third).
He has the single-game passing touchdown record with six in 2012 against Akron.
Dysert is also the program’s leader in total yards, with 12,678.
5. Brad Cousino
Cousino was a linebacker for Miami (OH) from 1972 to 1974, playing just three seasons.
He had 515 tackles (fifth), averaging nearly 172 per season. Every player ranked ahead of him played four or more seasons, and the first-place slot belongs to Curt McMillan, who played four seasons from 1989 to 1992 and has 575 tackles.
Cousino was a two-time MAC Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American.
