Frank Brimsek (1938-39, Boston Bruins)
With six shutouts in his first 10 games, Frank Brimsek’s start set the stage for an unparalleled rookie season. Brimsek is the only goaltender to win the Calder Trophy, Vezina Trophy, and Stanley Cup in the same season.
Nicknamed Mr. Zero for his ability to shut down opponents, Brimsek won 8 of 12 postseason games after a sublime rookie season, propelling the Boston Bruins to glory.
Brimsek was 25 years old during the silverware-adorned season.
Tony Esposito (1969-70, Chicago Black Hawks)
Tony Esposito led the Chicago Black Hawks to a first-place finish with a sparkling 38-17-8 record.
He finished the season with 15 shutouts, nine more than second-place Eddie Giacomin. Esposito played 13 games in his first season, making him eligible for the Calder Trophy in his second campaign.
Esposito went on to win two more Vezinas in 1971-72 and 1973-74.
Tom Barrasso (1983-84, Buffalo Sabres)
What makes Tom Barrasso’s Calder Trophy and Vezina Trophy double more meaningful is that it came after the Vezina Trophy criteria changed.
Barrasso had the second-best GAA (2.85) and was tied for the third-best save percentage (.893). He didn’t win another Vezina Trophy, but won the William Jennings Trophy in 1984-85 and sipped from the Holy Grail in consecutive seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Ed Belfour (1990-91, Chicago Blackhawks)
Ed Belfour played a staggering 74 games during his Calder and Vezina-winning double season. It was the busiest season of his career. He surpassed the 70-game barrier two other times, all three of which occurred in the first five seasons of his decorated career.
Belfour had the best save percentage (.910), the best GAA (2.47), and tied for the second-most shutouts (four).
Belfour won the William Jennings Trophy in the same season.
