1. Joe Montana
Before Tom Brady, there was Joe Montana. The original “Joe Cool” Montana won four Super Bowls for the 49ers. In the postseason, he was 16-7 with 5,772 passing yards, 45 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions.
He won three Super Bowl MVP awards and two league MVP awards, passed for over 40,000 yards, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
2. Jerry Rice
A three-time Super Bowl champion, Rice is considered by many to be the best wide receiver to ever play in the NFL. He finished his career with 1,549 receptions, 22,895 yards, 197 touchdowns, and averaged 14.8 yards per catch.
He’s enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
He holds NFL records for career receptions, yards, touchdowns, and all-purpose yards.
3. Steve Young
Imagine going from Montana to Young?
That was the 49ers’ fortunes. He arrived at the 49ers in 1987 after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Vinny Testaverde.
He was initially Montana’s backup, and they traded a mere second and fourth-round pick for him. In 13 seasons with the 49ers, he went 91-33, threw for 29,907 yards in the regular season, and had 232 passing touchdowns.
He won three Super Bowls, one Super Bowl MVP, and two league MVP awards, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was an excellent dual-threat signal caller, amassing 4,239 rushing yards and 43 scores in his career.
4. Ronnie Lott
When it comes to defensive backs, there aren’t many better than Lott. Playing with the 49ers from 1981-1990, Lott was a four-time Super Bowl winner, an eight-time first-team All-Pro, a 10-time Pro Bowler, and led the league in interceptions in two seasons.
He also holds the record for most pick-sixes by a rookie with three. He finished his career with 63 interceptions, 16 forced fumbles, 17 fumble recoveries, and five touchdowns.
5. Dwight Clark
Before the 49ers drafted Rice, they drafted Clark in the 10th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He played with the 49ers from 1979 to 1987, playing two years with Rice. He won two Super Bowls, had 506 receptions for 6,750 yards, and 48 touchdowns.
Clark had one of the most memorable moments in 49ers history, catching a 6-yard touchdown in the 1981 NFC championship game against the Dallas Cowboys when they were down 27-21.
The 49ers then went on to win the Super Bowl.
6. Terrell Owens
The 49ers went from Clark and Rice in 1985 to Rice and Owens in 1996.
Owens is a much-maligned figure in pro football, especially with the media. Still, in his eight seasons with the 49ers, he caught 592 passes for 8,572 yards and 81 touchdowns.
In his career with the 49ers, he was a three-time first-team All-Pro, four-time Pro Bowler, and two-time touchdown leader. He is in the 49ers Hall of Fame.
7. Jimmy Johnson
Turning back the clock, Johnson played in an era where the 49ers were in the doldrums of their history. From 1961 to 1976, he was a defensive back and wide receiver for the team.
During that span, the 49ers had seven seasons above a .500 record and only one double-digit win season in a 14-game schedule.
He was a four-time first-team All-Pro, four-time second-team All-Pro, five-time Pro Bowler, won the George Halas Award in 1972, and played his entire career with the 49ers.
His No. 37 jersey is retired, and he’s a Pro Football Hall of Fame member. He finished his career with 47 interceptions and two pick-sixes. As a receiver, he had 40 receptions for 690 yards and four touchdowns.
