What Criteria Are Used For College Football Rankings?

The Selection Committee ranks its top 25 teams based on game tape, strength of schedule, results, and common opponents.

Each member ranks teams in a multi-step voting process, taking into account the performances throughout the season.

How the Rankings Are Done

Here’s how the rankings are done for the College Football Playoff:

  • 12 teams are selected overall.
  • The committee’s five highest-ranked conference champions earn automatic bids. This is regardless of where they’re at in the top 25, even if they’re not inside the top 25.
  • The four highest-ranked teams, whether they win the conference championship or not, will receive the top four seeds and a first-round bye.
  • Teams seeded 5-12 will be based on their final ranking.
  • If any of the five-highest-ranked conference champions fall outside the top  12, they’ll receive the No. 12 seed.
